Officially opened by the Governor General Lord Gowrie on 11 November 1941, completion to the Roll of Honour and Hall of Memory were deffered due to World War II and further extensions were completed and opened in 1971.

The Australian War Memorial is located at the foot of Mt. Ainslie, at the top of ANZAC Parade and is open 10.00am - 5.00pm daily and admission is free.
